Bauhaus Dessau

The Bauhaus building was constructed between 1925 and 1926 from designs by Walter Gropius. The impressive ensemble of glass, steel and concrete exemplifies the conception of its architect: Form follows Function.
The Bauhaus Dessau was a creative centre for architecture, art and design whose influence reached aroand the globe and which helped to form our modern world.

St. Mary's Church The Castle and town church of St. Mary was constructed from 1506 to 1554 ander the direction of Ulrich von Schmiederg. The building was consecrated as a Catholic church in 1523. After being almost completely destroyed in the Second World War the church was rebuilt from 1990 to 1998 and today is used as a venue for diverse events.

Villa Kroetenhof

This prestigious villa was built in 1887 in the Wilhelminian style of the time. The exterior of the building emerged almost unscathed from the ravages of the Second World War. The unusual name was adopted from the fountain in the shape of an overgrown toad (Kroete) which was placed in the entrance hall in 1947. Following extensive renovation work this impressive house has joined the list of festival venues.

Radisson Blu Hotel Fuerst Leopold
The Radisson Blu Hotel Fuerst Leopold is located right in the heart of Dessau’s town centre, near to the theatre and train station. With its modern design the hotel offers a bold contrast to the city’s architectural heritage and is an ideal base for excursions to the garden paradise of Dessau-Woerlitz.
The precepts of the Bauhaus style are echoed in the hotel: clear and non-fussy lines, with daring colour combinations and a modern, lively design.

Paechterhaus Dessau

The Paechterhaus Dessau, built in 1743, is the oldest building in Dessau-Ziebigk. Following painstaking and loving renovation work, visitors can now soak up a very special atmosphere in the three comfortable “Gutsstuben” rooms and the “Moritzstube”.
For connoisseurs of good food and wine the Paechterhaus is also a prime address in Dessau. The French gourmet-bible Gault Millau gives the restaurant a rating of 13 from 20 points. It is thus one of the 10 best restaurants in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Paechterhaus is participating for the second time in the Kurt Weill Festival Dessau and will hold a “Dinner with Music”.

Georgium Castle

After the Woerlitzer parks, the Georgium is the second largest country park in the Dessau-Woerlitzer garden landscape. The Castle and park ensemble was constructed from 1780 by Prince Johann Georg von Anhalt-Dessau (1748-1811) and is named after him. The prince adopted the ideas and the landscaping arts fostered by his brother, the regent Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau.
This extravagantly designed garden in the so-called English style includes numerous classical buildings, dwellings and sculptures that are in an harmonious balance with nature. Today the Castle is home to Anhalt’s state painting collection and has been a venue of the Kurt Weill Festival since 2003.

Koethen Castle (Mirrored Hall)

In its search for attractive venues the Kurt Weill Festival has landed in Köthen. The royal court in Castle Koethen achieved worldwide fame thanks to the work of its Court Music Director from 1717 to 1723, a certain J. S. Bach. The mirrored hall, completed in 1822, is located in the Ludwig section of the Castle and is a delightful addition to our list of venues.
Koethen is about 30 min from Dessau by car or train.

Kurt-Weill-Centre / Feininger Master's House

Lyonel Feininger lived and worked with his family in this house during his activities at the Bauhaus school between 1926 and 1932. Originally there was an adjacent section to the building in which L. Moholy-Nagy lived. However this building half was destroyed during the war and was never rebuilt.
The colour design is perhaps one of the most impressive features of the house, a result of collaborative work between the tenants and the Bauhaus design studio for mural painting.
Restoration experts foand 40 different colours on the walls, ceilings and floors.
Following the completion of renovations in 1994 the Feininger House became home to the Kurt Weill Centre. This is the only European site dedicated to documenting the life and work of the composer, born in the city of Dessau in 1900. The centre also provides a venue for special exhibitions and other events during the Kurt Weill Festival.

Johann Building / City Museum Dessau

The Local History Museum has been located in the Johann building since 1999. It was originally the residence of the Princes and Dukes of Anhalt. This part, the west wing, is the only part remaining after war damage in 1945. The Johann building dates from 1530 - 33 and Dessau is proud to be the owner of one of the oldest and most important early Renaissance palace buildings in Middle Germany.

Palais Dietrich

Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau had planned to build town residences for his three youngest sons Moritz, Eugen and Dietrich. The Palais Dietrich, built between 1747 and 1752, was one of the few historical buildings in Dessau to be untouched by the destruction of the Second World War. The palace was renovated in 1987 to accommodate the collections of the former state library, and now houses the scientific library of the Anhaltischen Landesbücherei Dessau. The Palais Dietrich is an important information, education and communication centre in the city. The ballroom in Palais Dietrich was included in the list of venues for the Kurt Weill Festival in 2005.
