Artist-in-Residence

2012 - Ute Gfrerer

In the past few years Ute Gfrerer established herself as one of the leading interpreters of the music of Kurt Weill.
After her studies in voice and acting in Los Angeles she was an ensemble member at several opera houses in Germany and Austria (including the Vienna „Volksoper“ for several years) before she went freelance.
Under the musical direction of conductors like Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Welser-Moest, HK Gruber and Ingo Metzmacher she sang as a guest in Zurich, Hamburg, Munich, London, Salzburg , Bregenz and of course Vienna.
In 2008 she gave her debut as Anna in „the Seven Deadly Sins“ at the Hercules Saal in Munich with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and since then she also performed this role with the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Philharmonie in Cologne, as well as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at the Festival Nord Norge in Harstad, Norway in 2009.
Besides singing the German Weill repertoire (like Polly in the Threepenny opera at the Megaron in Athens) she also emerged in his French compositions collaborating with the French „Trio Futurum“ on a very ambitious CD project with French Weill songs or the Orchestre de Bretagne for performances of the rarely played „Marie Galante Suite“ in 2009.
And living in Boston for the past 5 years she of course also conquers the „Broadway Weill“. After singing the role of Eliza Elliott in „Lady in the Dark“ in 2008 she was „Venus“ in a production of „One Touch of Venus“ at the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau, Germany in 2010.
The repertory of this multitalented singer also includes roles in Mozart operas such as Susanna in „Le nozze di Figaro“, Donna Elvira in „Don Giovanni“, or Despina in „Cosi fan tutte“, as well as the role of Jenny in „The Rise and Fall of The City of Mahagonny“ (Weill), Adele in „Die Fledermaus „ by Johann Strauss and Eliza Doolittle in „My Fair Lady“ by Federick Loewe.
In addition to that she also sings new music, e.g. the role of Kathi in Gottfried von Einem's opera „Der Zerissene“, Abigail Williams in Robert Ward's „The Crucible“ or the main lead in „Tania“, an opera about the abduction of Patty Hearst , written by American composer Anthony Davies.
Besides that Ute Gfrerer sings Musicals and Chansons and performs her own Cabaret Programs.
She toured as a soloist through the USA, Japan, Russia, the Ukraine, Mexico and Guatemala.
DVDs of several operettas featuring Ute Gfrerer can be found on Amazon, e.g. „The Merry Widow“ a production of the Zurich Opera.
