The grand finale of the residency of the MDR Symphony Orchestra and its charismatic principal conductor Kristjan Järvi also brings the Festival to a brilliant close. This new version of the anti-war drama about the soldier Johnny Johnson, arranged by Gene Pritsker and with a revised libretto by Bernhard Bettermann, is hugely relevant to our conflict-ridden modern age. The story tells of a simple man, a convinced pacifist, who decides to sign up for the front in order to attempt to halt the fighting, at least for a moment.

This rousing plea for peace thus becomes the thought-provoking final work at the 25th Kurt Weill Festival. It shows how Weill's social conscience can serve as a fine example to us all. We all must strive to work together in a spirit of harmony in order to face the challenges of the present day without sinking into fear and hate.

Created out of a bold vision, the Kurt Weill Festival was only able to grow by bringing together many curious, liberal-minded visitors and artists. All of these people share a belief in the openness and tolerance exemplified through the lives of Martin Luther, Moses Mendelssohn and, of course, Kurt Weill.

With this thrilling concert the Festival continues to nurture the memory of Weill and his eternally relevant music.
