Piano: Aurelia Shimkus
In 2017 the Festival is once again set to win the honorary title "Young Musicians' Festival of the Year" by (amongst other activities) inviting the most recent ECHO Klassik prizewinner, Aurelia Shimkus. The young Latvian began to play the piano at only four years of age. She performed her first public concert at age seven. Only two years later she won first prize at a national competition for young pianists. This was the launch pad to a stellar career, which has seen her perform around the world at major concert venues.
In her programme for the Kurt Weill Festival, Shimkus brings together three composers whose musical oeuvres are closely interlinked. The reputation of Johann Sebastian Bach, composer to the Reformation, blossomed in the 19th century through the efforts of Felix Mendelssohn. Ferruccio Busoni, worshipped Bach and took every opportunity to translate his great works for modern-day performance. Thus Busoni arranged one of Bach's most brilliant organ pieces, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, for piano.
This work, which demands all of a pianist's technical resources, illustrates Bach modern spirit. With his Lieder ohne Worte, Mendelssohn created a rich treasure chest of lyric melody and crystalline form for the piano repertoire. This concert programme not only highlights the close interconnections within classical music but also the astonishing skills of the next generation of young piano virtuosi.
