Anhaltische Philharmonic Orchestra Dessau

Over the 250-year history of the Anhaltische Philharmonic Orchestra, Dessau has often hosted major world (or German) premieres. In the 1920s the orchestra was a champion of contemporary music, works that today we can assign to the Classic Modernist movement. Albert Bing, who taught Kurt Weill, was the successor to Hans Knappertsbusch as the orchestra's conductor. On 14 June 1923 he conducted the premiere of a work by his protégé: Quodlibet, the orchestral suite from the music to Weill's children's pantomime Zaubernacht. The audience can look forward to otherworldly sounds in this tale of two siblings, a fairy and toys that come to life.

Two years later came the premiere of the "ballet mystery" Ogelala, whose primitive rhythms and ecstatic brutality clearly echo Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps. Grosz shared Weill and Schulhoff's fate of being condemned by the Nazis as degenerate. Their innovative style of composing encountered considerable resistance.

The programme closes with the two ballet suites to Daphnis et Chloé. In 1912 Maurice Ravel created this brilliant "musical fresco" for the Ballets Russes and their artistic director Sergei Diaghilev. Once again the Anhaltische Philharmonic Orchestra will display its great skill in performing the complex music of the early 20th century.
