The Threepenny Opera
(1931; rated 12 years and over; German)

Director: Georg Wilhelm Pabst
Kurt Weill

The Threepenny Opera is Kurt Weill's musical memorial. In 1930 the composer and librettist Bertolt Brecht attempted to prevent the filming of their work, seeing it as a bastardization. Following a court case, the two sides came to a controversial agreement. Between 1931 and 1933 the movie, which featured Lotte Lenya, help to boost the popularity of The Threepenny Opera. The wild enthusiasm, however, quickly cooled after the accession to power of the Nazi party, when Kurt Weill's work was banned.

This film is a real must-see at our jubilee festival, and a wonderful reminder of the brilliance of Kurt Weill!
