Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

College of Music, Leipzig

The Enlightenment was the continuation of the Reformation in civic life, paving the way to the Classic Modernist movement. Don't miss the next instalment of our thrilling musical journey led by Anja Schiffel and students of Leipzig's College of Music.

This evening's composers are closely linked to Enlightenment ideals. Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny were only able to enjoy prominent careers due to the work of great educators and philosophers such as their grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn. Beethoven's music breathes the spirit of freedom and the French Revolution: Only very few composers have had such a transformative influence on the work of later generations. An evening that sets us on the path to the Classic Modernist period and to Kurt Weill.
