It is a sign of the great partnership between the Kurt Weill Festival and the Anhaltisches Theater that this exciting double-evening is once again on the programme. Béla Bartók and Kurt Weill had the common aim of revolutionizing the world of music and shattering the rules of the dogmatic late Romantic period. Both men also shared the fate of being branded "degenerate" by the Nazi authorities, forcing them into exile in the USA.
The ballet The Miraculous Mandarin tells of the dark side of life, bringing us a claustrophobic vision of the end of days in its lush and innovative orchestration. The evening's second work, Bartók's one-act opera Bluebeard's Castle, is a thrilling drama driven by the unfulfilled desire to save the world through love. The broadcaster Deutschlandradio is full of praise for this production, calling it an "outstanding, highly intensive evening". Tomasz Kajdanski and his ballet company have once again managed to bring a slightly downsized version of Mandarin to the stage that loses nothing in its impact. Festivalgoers now have the opportunity to revisit this fascinating double-evening. Let yourself be carried away by the sounds of the Classic Modernist period. An evening to miss at your peril!
