God laughs with his creatures
A humorous look at Jewish life
Narrator: Gerhard Kämpfe
Musical accompaniment: Karsten Troyke
"God laughs with his creatures, not about his creatures." So says the Talmud. And Paul Spiegel, the former chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, who died in 2006, once wrote: "Jewish humour was and is the most beautiful weapon of a minority, because humour does not kill."
Wit and chutzpah are an essential part of everyday Jewish life and certainly shaped Kurt Weill's outlook.
As the son of a Jewish mother, Gerhard Kampf also grew up with Jewish jokes and amusing anecdotes. This year for the first time, the Director of the Kurt Weill Festival will present these stories in the foyer of the Altes Theater.
