A truly successful collaboration between Saxony-Anhalt's various cultural institutions: For the very first time, three of the state's opera houses are coming together at the Kurt Weill Festival 2017.
The cooperation with Halle Opera House kicks off with Weill's most important and most critical opera, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, a work which transformed political music theatre in the 20th century. The golden rules of this city are: "Firstly, don't forget to stuff your face; secondly comes love; thirdly, don't forget there's boxing; fourthly, drink as long as you can. But most importantly, remember: Everything is permitted in this town."
Founded as a city of dreams for gold prospectors somewhere in the middle of nowhere, all amusements and diversions that money can buy are on offer. However, the pursuit of pleasure quickly leads to excess, and the anarchic-hedonistic society of this utopian city begins to destroy itself. The tale is a warning against the uninhibited consumption of people and resources, which today has lost nothing of its relevance. Whether "Alabama Song" or "Auf nach Mahagonny" ("Off to Mahagonny"), the work features evergreens that fascinate artists and audiences alike. Discover with us the connections that director Michael von zur Mühlen has forged between present and the past in this staging.
