La BETTLEROPERa
A guest performance of the
Neuköllner Oper Berlin

Musik and Lyrics by Moritz Eggert
Text by John Gay

Ballet Civile La Spezia, Freiraum Syndicate
Neuköllner Oper Berlin

It was a stroke of genius: With London enthralled by George Frideric Handel's Italian operas, the world premiere of The Beggar's Opera in 1728 served to explode the reigning artistic conventions. Composer Johann Christian Pepusch, like Handel originally from Germany, had been living in England since 1704. Together with his lyricist John Gay, he took a sledgehammer to the practice of opera, dispensing with the typical historical or mythological subject matter to offer his audience music theatre performed in English and rooted in ordinary life.

Exactly two hundred years later, The Beggar's Opera became the model for Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera. Who can doubt that this was also a stroke of genius? Yet can it somehow be bettered? Well, the Neuköllner Oper of Berlin is taking on the challenge by presenting a modern version of the work entitled La BETTLEROPERa. Ten German and Italian actors, dancers and singers are joining forces to present their physically dynamic and emotionally poetic new version of the timeless story of life's vagaries, of money and power, love and betrayal. The newly composed score by Moritz Eggert will be performed by the musicians of the ensemble Freiraum Syndikat.

The guest performance of this co-production of the Neuköllner Oper Berlin and the award-winning Italian dance theatre company Balletto Civile will display one novel facet of our motto "Weill on stage!".
